When you visit Nafplio, you are bound to travel back in time, walk in a living museum and witness the influence of different cultures.
Upon your arrival in Nafplio, start your walk from the Land Gate, the first entry point to the old city. Let your footsteps take you to the church of Agios Spiridon, where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece, was murdered, pass through Vouleftikon, the first parliament of Greece, and end up in Syntagma Square, where you will see Trianon, the Old Mosque, one of the oldest surviving buildings from the period of Ottoman rule in this area.

 

A visit to Palamidi fortress, either by climbing its stairs or driving uphill, will surely remain indelible in your memory. Built in 1687 by the Venetians at a height of 216 meters, Palamidi fortress goes back in history hand in hand with the old town of Nafplio. One of the main attractions in the fortress includes the prison cell of the military leader of the Greek Revolution, Theodoros Kolokotronis, and the church of Agios Andreas.
In addition, if you want to delve into the history of the surrounding area, you should definitely visit the Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns, an archaeological site dating back to about 5,000 BC, while a visit to the Archaeological Site of Mycenae, with its vaulted tombs and Lion Gate will surely be unforgettable.
